It is not uncommon to see birds of prey - eagles, osprey, hawks, owls and falcons - in their respective hunting environs at Yakona. Birders and those with binoculars may also sight many types of migratory waterfowl, shore birds and songbirds. A local birding club has conducted Christmas bird counts at Yakona for several years. A trained ear can often hear a species before seeing it.
