We’ve partnered with Agents of Discovery to create a new digital learning experience at Yakona!

Agents of Discovery is a mobile augmented reality game to play and discover the world around you. Unlock hidden geo-located challenges that can only be solved through exploration and discovery.

 We have two on-site missions that must be played while you are visiting Yakona. We also have a virtual mission that can be accessed from anywhere, even from the comfort of your own living room. Each mission is a series of interactive challenges to learn and explore.

How to Play Agents of Discovery:

Download the free app BEFORE you visit Yakona. Once the missions have been downloaded, the app does not need WIFI or data to run:
 

  1. Open the app on your smart phone or tablet. Select “Login” if you want to track your progress. You can choose to create an account, or you can play as a guest.

  2. Tap on Missions.

  3. Mission Sites appear based on your GPS location, so make sure your GPS is turned on!

  4. Search for Yakona’s Elk Highway Loop or Montana Trail missions. If playing the virtual mission from home, choose our Virtual Tour mission.

You can play our missions in English or Spanish. To switch the language, go to "Settings" in the app.

Explore Yakona’s Unique Experiences

The Yakona App offers captivating experiences that immerse users in the preserve’s diverse history and natural beauty. Users can hear from founders Bill and JoAnn Barton, and learn about the Yaqo'n people and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, who were the first to call Yakona home. Users may explore the contributions of T. Egenton Hogg, discover the story of the West Yaquina community, understand the role of this region during World War I, and even climb the West Yaquina Heritage Tree with scientists. Additionally, the app highlights current conservation efforts and the ongoing restoration of old-growth habitats, while educating about the preserve's diverse ecosystems, leave no trace policy, and the importance of student science in all Yakona does.

Accessing the Yakona App

Yakona Nature Preserve & Learning Center is excited to announce the launch of the Yakona App, developed in collaboration with TimeLooper. This app is designed to allow those who cannot physically visit Yakona to experience it virtually through augmented reality (AR), bringing the rich history and vibrant ecology of Yakona directly to your living room or backyard.

The Yakona Nature Preserve App is available for download on iOS and Android devices. To experience the magic of Yakona Nature Preserve and Learning Center through augmented reality, simply download the app from your device’s app store. Once installed, follow the instructions within the app to use the AR features to bring 3D models, videos, oral histories, and images to life, making you feel as though you are walking through the preserve.
